HotDocs in Brief

The first comprehensive Automated Document Creation software to see mainstream use, HotDocs remains a market leader, and combines breadth and depth of functionality. Automated Document Creation preserves the role of human lawyers in wording the clauses that form the raw material of their drafts as they see fit, but renovates the clause selection and variable population process with the aim of accelerating turnaround times and improving accuracy. This kind of platform enables the evolution of existing templates into automated versions that generate questionnaires to gather the data they need to produce an iteration. The mark-up interfaces in which this is accomplished are designed for subject-matter experts rather than IT professionals.

Offering desktop, server, or cloud environments, HotDocs is suited to deployment in a range of enterprise-level document generation scenarios in legal and other contexts. Questionnaire data entry can be done by lawyers, other employees, or clients. Depending on the project, this data might determine only simple variables, such as date or party name, or decide between vast libraries of possible clauses across a range of documents generated from a single session. Members of the large and experienced HotDocs community can trade templates they have automated on a thriving aftermarket.

HotDocs and other platforms

Recent entrants, such as XpressDox, offer more attractive prices at the expense of less attractive mark-up interfaces, and do not match HotDocs’s capacity for incorporating document automation tasks into wider processes (through the HotDocs API). HotDocs’ main competitor, the newer ContractExpress, broadens the scope of Document Automation platforms to encompass built-in workflow integration.
