The Legal Technology Laboratory is now housed under the Center for Law, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation (CLEI) as one of its “Community of Practice” networks. The CLEI, led by the UMKC School of Law, is a dynamic platform for multidisciplinary collaboration that focuses on education, service to the community, and investment in strategic networks to sponsor innovation and bridge gaps in access to justice. The LTL will benefit from the multidisciplinary expertise the CLEI and its group of fellows and advisors bring along with funding support that will power constant updates and further its mission to advance the field of law and legal processes by utilizing emerging technologies.
Key Purpose
Because of its interdisciplinary and multi-institutional nature, the CLEI is able to offer a wide range of services in an effort to stimulate entrepreneurship and innovation, including:
- Access to Justice and Legal Services for Entrepreneurs / Innovators. These services include assistance with starting a business, self-representation, and taxes, all of which can be pivotal for the success of local businesses.
- Law & Entrepreneurship Education for Students & Entrepreneurs. Rooted in the UMKC School of Law, the CLEI directly supports the training of new lawyers through internships, project-based courses, and guest lectures.
- Developing Local, Regional, and National “Community of Practice” Networks. In addition to leading two entrepreneurship and innovation platforms, the CLEI is involved with other networks across the country to promote multidisciplinary collaboration and contribute to the investments in knowledge and technology to improve community well-being.
- Access to Justice and Legal Services for Other Community Members. The CLEI is committed to engaging with the community. One way it does so is through projects like the Kansas Protection Order Portal which provides a free, simple way for Kansans to file petitions for protection and access helpful resources.
